Belarus has dismantled a major drug cartel from Eastern Europe: over 1.5 tons of psychotropic substances seized
The seizure of tons of psychotropic substances and the arrest of dozens of participants indicate that the region has long been a key link in the transit of drugs from the EU to Russia.

Belarusian and Russian law enforcement agencies have dealt what may be one of the most powerful blows in recent years to transnational drug trafficking. As a result of a coordinated operation, a major supply route for psychotropic substances from European Union countries to Russia, passing through Belarus, was dismantled.

The central figure in the operation was a 47-year-old coordinator of the criminal scheme, who was found with 674 kilograms of psychotropic drugs at the time of his arrest. According to investigators, he managed logistics, ensured transportation, and controlled the cartel’s financial flows. His arrest marked a turning point for the entire operation, which had reportedly been conducted over several months in close coordination with Russian counterparts.

In total, 14 members of the criminal group were detained during the operation. The suspects range in age from 31 to 56 years old. According to available information, all of them are cooperating with the investigation, which could aid in further uncovering the cartel’s structure and the scope of its activities.

Investigators emphasize that this was not a case involving minor drug couriers, but a structured organization with resources, logistics, and stable supply channels.

The methods employed by the cartel are striking in their sophistication. Psychotropic substances were concealed in spare truck tires, built into car doors, and even hidden inside gas cylinders. Such concealment demonstrates a high level of organization, technical expertise, and a well-designed system to evade detection.

The total volume of seized drugs exceeded 1.5 tons. In addition to the arrests in Belarus, Russian operatives, presumably as part of the same operation, confiscated an additional 84 kilograms of psychotropic substances.

Two key suspects have already received prison sentences ranging from 13 to 18 years. Charges include illegal trafficking of psychotropic substances as part of an organized group, participation in a criminal organization, and smuggling across state borders.

Investigators also seized $45,000 — funds believed to have been obtained from drug sales. This money was transferred to the deposit of the Investigative Committee.

While authorities have not yet reported direct links to other groups, a separate incident at the Belarus-Poland border in July 2024, when a courier carrying 165 kilograms of psychotropic drugs was detained, may indicate a broader network operating in Eastern Europe. It is possible that this operation is part of a large-scale investigation aimed at completely dismantling the cross-border supply channel.

Belarusian investigative agencies stress that the operation is not yet complete: work continues to identify all links in the chain, as well as possible international connections. Representatives of the Investigative Committee have stated that the investigation will be expanded to trace the entire drug supply route — from the source of production to the final distributors.
